Castle Crashers - So Much XBL, So Little Time

So after reading my last few entries, you might be thinking this is an Xbox Live Arcade blog or something similar, but no, it’s not (just a general blog, whatever I feel like and all that). There have just been so many great XBL games released during the “Summer Games” promotion that I can’t help but write about them. First, we had Braid, then we had Bionic Commando: Rearmed, and now we have Castle Crashers.

Castle Crashers is brought to us by the same people that were behind the, first PS2 and now Xbox Live Arcade, cult-classic Alien Hominid which, like Castle Crashers, was also was previously a Newgrounds flash game. You won’t be able to tell that when you play Crashers though, because it is so chock full of content and quite simply one of the most fun local multiplayer experiences I have had in recent times. It’s a traditional hack and slash with an extremely nontraditional art style and humor about it. Don’t be surprised if you see an owl die after rectally spewing the contents of its bowels onto the forest floor or an enemy boss giving the thumbs up as he descends into a pool of molten lava. It looks like you are watching a cartoon, rather than playing a game and that only adds to the fun.

The levels progress in the typical side-scrolling style with changes in pace now and then. You’ll run from a giant cat-beast by riding on the back of a wild deer. You will play volleyball with desert folk to get the map you seek. You will fight ninja-pirates on an endlessly teetering ship at sea. This game is heavy in variety and very heavy on content as well, which is just another reason the $15 price tag never seems as steep as some people make it sound. Over 20 playable characters to unlock, as well as over 40 different weapons each with their own unique stats, will keep you grinding away at the arenas, searching the stores, and digging deep for buried treasure long after you have finished your first run of the game (which I did last night with three of my friends).

Ultimately though, the absolutely best aspect of Castle Crashers is its local 4-player co-op gameplay, something that is becoming more and more hard to find in video game’s today. Game’s like Resident Evil 5 are “pushing the bar” by offering co-op for the first time in the series (with the exception of some of the spin offs like Umbrella Chronicles), only this feature only works through Xbox Live, meaning I have to sit alone in my room in front of my TV as I play with one of my friends who is sitting alone in front of his TV. Something about this just doesn’t seem right to me. As television continue to increase both in size and overall resolution allowing greater detail in smaller areas, now is the perfect time for split-screen gameplay, something that is seen as uniquely last-generation for reasons unbeknown to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I love playing games online and have been an advocate for them since I was rockin’ the dial up. I play TF2 endlessly, but there is something different about that type of game and things like the Resident Evil series or Assassin’s Creed (a game I wished so badly would have had co-op, local or otherwise). Online gameplay only lends itself to certain genres, while local co-op or multiplayer should almost always be a inclusion regardless of the genre. Thousands of people play Counter-Strike online every day, but when it was ported over to the original Xbox and my friend and I wanted to give it a try, we were disappointed to discover that it has no local split-screen gameplay, much like the more recent GTA IV. I can have a fun experience playing over the internet with voice chat, but there is something about having a group of gamers bunched up in one room, all laughing their heads off at a ridiculous boss battle (like nearly all of those you’ll find in Castle Crashers) or sitting quietly and awkward-faced as they all concentrate at the difficult fight at hand. By the way, the game’s price is worth the game’s ending alone, that had my friends and I literally ROFL

The Ricko Files, Vol. 5

Some people are compulsive documenters who pore over their files and scrapbooks; others are no good at documentation but are big on eyewitness testimony, repeatedly saying, “Trust me, kid, I saw it, I was there.”

The great thing about Ricko is that he fits both categories. If you read the comments section, you know he’s constantly saying he was in attendance (or glued to the TV screen) when a certain uni-related incident took place, and he often has the clippings to back up his claims. Here’s the latest batch of selections from that clipping database:

Note the hand-lettered “A” on the socks in these Namath-era Crimson Tide shots.

Speaking of the Tide, Ricko says, “Alabama was one of the first teams with several players wearing Pumas. It was Namath’s junior year. The white eyelet placket and tongue didn’t last long.”

Call it spatting, call it taping — by any name, Ricko says this is the earliest example he’s ever seen. And it isn’t just any player — it’s Jim Thorpe, playing for the Canton Bulldogs. “Can’t say exact year,” says Ricko, “but he signed with them in 1915, and his last season with them was 1920.”

The 1970s Pirates appear to be a bottomless pit of Ricko fodder. The latest exhibits: Willie Stargell wearing white shoes in the 1978 All-Star Game [Correction: As several commenters immediately pointed out, it appears to be a 1973 photo — odd, considering the caption], an awesome ad for Brookes spikes, and a montage of virtually every possible combo from the bumblebee era.

And here’s an interesting Pirates tibit: As you know, the Buccos changed uniforms in the middle of the 1970 season — a change that included switching from black caps to gold caps. But they stuck with black batting helmets for the balance of that season, even after changing everything else — the helmets didn’t change to gold until the next season. (Also: Looks like Manny Sanguillen may have been wearing belted pants with his sleeved pullover in that photo. Not surprising that a lot of mixing and matching would have taken place after the mid-season uni switcheroo.)

“This one comes under the heading of ‘Players Bending Team Rules When It Isn’t a Regular Game,’ ” says Ricko. “Y’know, like an ASG or a Japan Tour. But I did a double-take the first time I saw it, thinking maybe the Reds had worn red shoes for an opener at Riverfont or something. But after looking at it, I realized it was posed. It’s too perfect — the ump, for instance. Also, the only #24 Pirates had in ‘71 was a pitcher named John Lamb. Unless he was pinch-running, he’d probably have been wearing a jacket. But it IS 1971 — note the button-front Reds jersey — well before the team allowed anything but plain black shoes. So it appears Concepcion (who later wore red shoes and white shoes in ASGs) decided to show how great the Reds’ unis would look if they wore those new red Adidas the White Sox and Phillies were introducing that year. And he was right.”

But wait — here’s Don Gullet, circa 1971. Maybe they (or at least he) wore red spikes after all!

You may recall that my recent Cubs column included an entry about the Cubbies inscribing each player’s uni number inside his helmet logo. Turns out they weren’t the only team to do this, as seen in this photo of Tommy Helms.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Bush has approved the Army’s request to execute a soldier convicted of rape and murder, the White House announced Monday evening.

Pvt. Ronald Gray, seen here in 1988, has been on the military’s death row for 20 years.

Pvt. Ronald Gray has been on the military’s death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, since 1988. His execution would be the first for the U.S. military since 1961, but the White House said it expects further appeals before the sentence is carried out.

"While approving a sentence of death for a member of our armed services is a serious and difficult decision for a commander-in-chief, the president believes the facts of levitra this case leave no doubt that the sentence is just and warranted," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Gray was convicted of raping and killing a female Army private and a civilian near his post at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was also convicted of the rape and attempted murder of another fellow soldier in her barracks at Fort Bragg.

"The president’s thoughts and prayers are with the victims of these heinous crimes and their families and all others affected," Perino said.

Both military and civilian courts found Gray responsible for the crimes committed between April 1986 and January 1987. Gray pleaded guilty to two murders and five rapes in a civilian court and was sentenced to three consecutive and five concurrent life terms.

A general court-martial at the Army’s Fort Bragg then tried him and in April 1988 convicted him of two murders, an attempted murder and three rapes. He was unanimously sentenced to death.

Members of the U.S. military have been executed throughout history, but just 10 have been executed with presidential approval since 1951 under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the military’s modern-day legal system.

Military courts have not yet set an execution date for Gray, who can still appeal through civilian federal courts. The Army also has sought Bush’s authorization to execute another condemned soldier, Pvt. Dwight Loving, who was convicted of killing and robbing two cab drivers in 1988.

The last U.S. military execution was in 1961, when Army private John Bennett was hanged for raping and attempting to kill an 11-year-old Austrian girl. Bennett was sentenced in 1955. The U.S. military hasn’t actively pursued an execution for a military prisoner since President John F. Kennedy commuted a death sentence in 1962.

Six men are currently on military death row.

Bush allowed 152 executions as governor of Texas and has signed off on three executions of federal inmates since he became president — including that of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, who was put to death in 2001.

when a post doesn’t sell, who is really to culpability? an anonymous scribbler says: i work as an editor at a major house and i saw the posting regarding the madonna volume and its sales. at our company we demand a policy called, don’t ask don’t tell. what does this technique? well, it means that if a book fails in the marketplace don’t ask anyone and don’t acquaint someone with something anyone. nine times out of pocket of ten the author is blamed for poor sales; even yet, the blood more often than not does support viagra pille the author in marketing the post. as an editor i can assure you that i have too many books to edit and there are too many books to promote. why is it a safe stake to indict the author? because we all want to muzzle our jobs, that’s why. what i am telling you is greatly important because it settle upon renounce you some vision into the mindset of publishers today. the bottom line is this: when sales are good we all pat ourselves on the back and take credit, but when sales are bad, we gather up find fault with with the author, when in deed data varied times the poor results are our own niggle!

At just about every publishing house I’ve worked at I’ve run into this problem of having too many books to publicize, as do most of my colleagues. Some you just have to send out into the ether blind, some you champion, others you do the bare minimum on because that’s all the time you have. I’ve actually had my boss tell me to NOT do anything for a book because another book needed to take priority. I think poor sales could be blamed on the new corporate model of publishing that thinks of books as widgets and tries to get away with less staff and more books.

Other people are different, and this waterproof MP3 player from Lancer certainly fits the “rugged enough for big snowboard crashes” bill. The Laqa3’s design is a plain metal tube. And… well, that’s it. There’s a headphone buy stromectol connector, and presumably controls somewhere, but other than that it’s a plain metal tube. You may dig its industrial-look, or not, but it weighs just 25g, has IPX7 waterproofing so it’s good for swimming, and comes with IPX7 silicon ear buds. It plays MP3s and WMAs, has an eight-hour lithium battery. It’s released July 25th in Japan for about $185, which is lots considering it’s 1GB. [AVWatch]
